1 May 7, 2002 Kansas Tornadic Event

2 Introduction On May 7th, 2002 a Low Pressure system tore into the unsuspecting state of Kansas. When the storm had past, a path of destruction had ripped through the state dispersing family, tearing homes and business into piles of rubble. In this presentation I will piece together Illustrations and show how powerful this storm was.

3 500 mb. Chart for 020507012. The closed off low is located over Washington

4 500 mb chart for 02050800. The trough has dug into Idaho and Montana

5 Skew-t Chart for KOUN The sounding shows a deep moist layer. Cape was 4161 J/kg The Hodo-graph show tremendous Shear in the first 3 km.

6 Skew-t Chart for KTOP This is known as a loaded gun sounding Again, the shear in the first 3 km was insane

7 Surface Chart Note the moisture tongue extends from the Gulf of Mexico into Kansas.

8 Sat photos The top photo shows a young supercell forming.
By 6:15 CDT, The Supercell had turned into a monster with an anvil covering central part of Kansas

9 Radar By 6:37, radar had shown a super cell was forming.
Half hour later, a hook had formed East of Dodge City

10 Conclusion By the next morning, the frighten residents of Kansas had endured an outbreak of 30 tornadoes. With the help of modern technology, many people were given enough warning to live another day. This event will live in the minds Kansas people for generations to come.
