Hooks:
Ask a question- not a yes/no question. Start with how or why.
Definition- Begin with the meaning of your subject.
Quote- the quote must relate to the main idea of the paper.
Bold Statement- Start with a challenging statement.
Onomatopoeia- Start with a sound.
Dialogue- Start with a hypothetical conversation.
Anecdote- A brief story that relates to the topic.

4. Three Parts of an Introduction
The hook- pulls the reader into the essay; builds interest.
The bridge- ties the hook to the thesis. This could be background information, a clear definition of your topic, or introduces the topic to the reader.
Thesis statement- Last sentence of the introduction. Concise summary of the main idea or perspective of the paper.

5. "My heart is afraid that it will have to suffer," The boy tells the alchemist one night as they looked up at the moonless sky. The alchemist replies "Tell your heart that the fear of suffering is worse that the suffering itself. And that no heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of its dreams, because every second of the search is a seconds' encounter with God and Eternity." (Pg. 130) This is one of the many passages from The Alchemist, an inspiring tale about realizing your dreams and fulfilling your destiny. Paulo Coelho paints the reader's mind with surreal settings, a fascinating storyline, and a simple style of writing chock full of meaningful insights that will leave the reader feeling warm-hearted and inspired.

6. I want to be a famous actress, with two children, and five houses in five different countries. Everyone has goals. Whether they involve career, relationships, or self- actualization, goals are important to the development of an individual. When we are children we tend to set our goals high and expect them to be attained early in our lives. This idealism, however, quickly fades as we either set more easily attainable goals for ourselves or simply lose these idealistic goals altogether. The Alchemist, by Paulo Coehlo is about not letting these goals go so soon. The King of Salem tells Santiago that when we are children we have these goals because they are our Personal Legend. However, as we age, time causes us to forget our Personal Legend. Throughout his journey towards achieving his Personal Legend, Santiago struggles to discover precisely what is his Personal Legend.
