The role of the messenger:
2 Sam 18:27. The watchman said, “I think the running of the first is like the running of Ahimaaz the son of Zadok.” And the king said, “He is a good man and comes with good news.”

What is sin?
It is the glory of God not honored. The holiness of God not reverenced. The greatness of God not admired. The power of God not praised. The truth of God not sought. The wisdom of God not esteemed. The beauty of God not treasured. The goodness of God not savored. The faithfulness of God not trusted. The commandments of God not obeyed. The justice of God not respected. The wrath of God not feared. The grace of God not cherished. The presence of God not prized. The person of God not loved. That is sin.”

Isa 25:6–9. On this mountain the LORD of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wine, of rich food full of marrow, of aged wine well refined. 7 And he will swallow up on this mountain the covering that is cast over all peoples, the veil that is spread over all nations. 8 He will swallow up death forever; and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from all faces, and the reproach of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the LORD has spoken. 9 It will be said on that day, “Behold, this is our God; we have waited for him, that he might save us. This is the LORD; we have waited for him; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.”

7. The nature of the message:
“Good news” > peace, happiness, salvation, “Your God reigns”
Isa 40:9–11. Go on up to a high mountain, O Zion, herald of good news; lift up your voice with strength, O Jerusalem, herald of good news; lift it up, fear not; say to the cities of Judah, “Behold your God!” 10 Behold, the Lord GOD comes with might, and his arm rules for him; behold, his reward is with him, and his recompense before him. 11 He will tend his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms; he will carry them in his bosom, and gently lead those that are with young.

YHWH? “It is I who speak” (v. 6)
The Servant Savior?
“The LORD has bared his holy arm” (v. 10; cf. 53:1)
Isa 61:1–2. The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me because the LORD has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; 2 to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God.” (Cf. Luke 4:18–19)
Luke 4:43. I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well; for I was sent for this purpose.

9. The power of the good news for salvation:
Rom 1:16. For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
Past salvation: Eph 2:8. For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God
Present salvation: 1 Cor 1:18. For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
Future salvation: Rom 5:9. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.

11. A call to rejoice (vv. 8–10)
“All the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.
Luke 2:29–32 (Simeon). Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace, according to your word; 30 for my eyes have seen your salvation 31 that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, 32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel.” (Cf. Isa 49:6 with 52:10)
Luke 3:4–6. The voice of one crying in the wilderness: “Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. 5 Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low, and the crooked shall become straight, and the rough places shall become level ways, 6 and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.” (Cf. Isa 40:3–5 with 52:10)

12. The watchmen appropriate the Servant’s mission.
Acts 13:30–33. But God raised him from the dead, 31 and for many days he appeared to those who had come up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are now his witnesses to the people. 32 And we bring you the good news that what God promised to the fathers, 33 this he has fulfilled to us their children by raising Jesus.
Rom 10:13–15. For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” 14 How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? 15 And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”
