Formal Professor, may I ask you a question? Of course, go ahead. What date is the president’s birthday dinner? The birthday dinner is this Friday. Do you plan to attend? I’m not sure. This Friday is also my mother’s birthday. Oh I see. You shall be busy, Friday night!

Now try to make 2 conversations
With a partner, pick a situation. First create a conversation between a professor and student (Formal) and then 2 friends (colloquial.) write the conversations down. Use the phrases on the board to help you. The professor will walk around and check your status.

Choose a situation Your professor/friend has had their wallet stolen.
Stolen wallet. Your professor/friend has had their wallet stolen. You want to know when this happened. It happened this morning, near the gym. The professor/friend is new to the university and doesn’t know what to do. You offer to help them at the police station. They say thank you. (6 sentences Max) Music ticket problem Your professor/friend is really excited about next week’s music festival. You ask if this is the person’s first time and it is. He/she tells you the ticket is dated the 15th, but the festival starts the 14th. They ask if they can exchange the ticket, but you believe all the tickets are already gone. (6 sentences max) Choose a situation Cancelled Party You must tell your professor/friend that the “Star Party” has been cancelled. They ask why and you say because the DJ can’t come and the food company got in trouble. The other person is surprised and sad. (6 sentences Max)
