1 What is life like on the ISS?
By Year 6 at Fonthill Primary School What is life like on the ISS?

2 What is the ISS? A floating laboratory Orbits the Earth
Largest man-made object in Space The international space station is a floating laboratory in the sky. Lots of experiments are carried out here. It orbits Earth at a speed of 27,000km per hour. This means it goes around the Earth 16 times in one day! Surprisingly, it is only 400km above us. It is the largest man-made object in space. Many countries worked together to build it. It was too big to send up with one rocket, so it was sent up in pieces and built in orbit! In fact, it isn’t yet finished. By the time it is, it will be the size of a football pitch.

3 What is an astronaut’s daily routine?
Must look after the ISS – check condition and make repairs

4 What is an astronaut’s daily routine?
2 hours a day filled with exercise Lack of gravity = weakness

5 What is an astronaut’s daily routine?
Carry out experiments

6 How do astronauts keep clean?
Everyday tasks on the ISS are incredibly tricky because of the wa water behaves in the absence of gravity.

7 How do astronauts eat and drink?
Pouches with straws

8 How do astronauts go to the toilet?
Seatbelt needed! Like a vacuum cleaner!

9 How do astronauts sleep?
16 sunrises and sunsets Try to keep normal sleeping patterns Use Greenwich Meantime (GMT) to do this

10 Where do they get their supplies?
Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) Once a year Delivers goods Removes waste

11 Did you know…? …astronauts get taller in space! …the ISS is 19 years old! …you can track the position of the ISS online!
