2. What is the ISS? A floating laboratory Orbits the Earth
Largest man-made object in Space
The international space station is a floating laboratory in the sky. Lots of experiments are carried out here.
It orbits Earth at a speed of 27,000km per hour. This means it goes around the Earth 16 times in one day! Surprisingly, it is only 400km above us.
It is the largest man-made object in space. Many countries worked together to build it. It was too big to send up with one rocket, so it was sent up in pieces and built in orbit! In fact, it isn’t yet finished. By the time it is, it will be the size of a football pitch.
