2 Figure 1 Constitutive cytoprotective gene expression in human skin. Quantitative real-time reverse transcription–PCR was used to investigate the constitutive expression of a variety of (A) glutathione-dependent enzymes, (B) P450, (C) drug transporters, and (D) stress response genes in nonlesional skin, taken from untreated photoprotected buttock sites of a representative panel of the patients with psoriasis (n=10), as described in Materials and Methods. Gene expression was normalized to 18S ribosomal RNA to ensure equality of loading. All samples were analyzed in triplicate. Data are presented as mean gene expression across the panel, with the exception of GSTM1 and GSTT1 where the data represent mean expression in GSTM1 (n=5) and GSTT1 (n=8) genotype-positive individuals. The standard deviation represents the extent of interindividual variation across the panel.
