The Berlin Wall Communist East Germany built a 103 mile Berlin Wall in 1961 to keep East German citizens from escaping to the democratic style of West Germany. Official purpose was to keep the corrupted westerners out of the east Berlin wall was destroyed & Germany reunited: October 3, 1990
