Religion in Egypt standard 6.2.3

GOAL: To make your own Book of the Dead in which you will explain Egyptian beliefs about religion and the afterlife.

Part 1: In this world

Nearly 2000 gods: some for households,
some for cities, some for the whole kingdom.

Ka: the spirit. Hangs around the body and burial site after death. Had same needs as living person.

Funerary items help the dead live normally in the afterlife.

Mummification: so body wouldn’t decay.
1. Remove the brain by liquifying it. 2. Remove organs (except for heart) and put in canopic jars.

Mummification 3. Cover the corpse in natron and let it dry out for seventy days. 4. Wrap the mummy in treated bandages.

Average people not mummified. Hot, dry desert took care of it.

The sarcophagus: the final resting place.

Great Pyramid of Giza

Part 2: In the afterlife

In the Hall of Two Truths
1. Confront the gods and state your innocence.

From the 42 Negative Confessions
I have done no evil against any man, plotted to make another grieve, caused death, hunger, or weeping to others. I never gave false witness in law courts. I have not done that which is hated by the gods, or obstructed a god’s image when he came forward in a festival procession. I have not lessened the corn measure, or tampered with the balance. I have not deprived children of milk. I have not stolen cattle from the meadows. I have not taken fish from holy lakes, or prevented the temple cattle from grazing on my land. I have not prevented the Nile water from running in channels, or stolen water from a channel.

In the Hall of Judgment 2. Anubis weighs your heart against a feather. Heart and feather must weigh the same. Ammit awaits.

Ammit the devourer

The Book of the Dead: 200 spells, prayers, rituals to help spirit of the dead go through Duat.

Duat: the underworld. An obstacle course of gods and creatures who tested and challenged the spirit of the dead.

Aaru: the Reed Fields (the Egyptian paradise). Osiris’s kingdom
