Chapter 14.1-14.3: A Changing Society
EQ: What changes began taking place in American society in the early to mid 1800’s?(use examples to describe how their lives were affected)

Immigrants Most came by ship, crammed in filthy conditions in steerage (cheap seats!) for up to a month or more Many became ill or died on the journey Immigrated from countries including; Britain, Ireland, Germany, Scandinavia, and China

Push-Pull Factors Push- forced -(population growth, farming difficulties, religion/politics, Industrial Revolution) Pull- attracted- (freedom, economic opportunity , land) Push-Pull factors are forces that push people out of their native land and pull them toward a new place

CONS PROS Major cities populations exploded Lack of housing Trash, outdoor toilet, and disease issues Many cities had no fire or police departments Immigrants often faced anger and/or prejudice New skills/culture/foods etc With so many workers creating things it became much more common in daily life to buy things instead of making/growing your own Pushed cities to create assistance for immigrants, and fire and police departments

American Literature Washington Irving, James Fenimore Cooper, and other authors of 1800’s influenced by romanticism stressing imagination, creativity, and emotion -first time in American history writers could make a living by only writing fiction stories

American Art artists also influenced by romanticism
romanticism: a European artistic movement that stressed the individual, imagination, and emotion Hudson River School in New York taught natural lush landscape techniques - how to paint mountains, rivers, forests, etc known as the Hudson River School style of painting

American Thought Transcendentalism - taught that spiritual world is more important than physical world Second Great Awakening – as churches sprung up across the western frontier Temperance movement – a campaign to stop the drinking of alcohol, many states make the sale of alcohol illegal (women led the charge on this!)

Education By 1850 most Northern states had public elementary schools, high schools slowly followed rare for females to attend college, most not even allowing women to apply difficult for African Americans to receive an education, illegal to educate slaves in South and most Northern schools banned blacks Elizabeth Blackwell (Became first woman doctor in 1849)
