Bell Activity – Split your scrap paper in half and label one side ‘ACID’ and the other side ‘BASE’
Place the following phrases under the appropriate heading: Reacts with metals Tastes Sour Baking Soda Tastes Bitter Turns red litmus paper blue Vinegar Turns blue litmus paper red Feels slippery Drano Conducts electricity pH from 0 – 6 Makes ammonia gas pH from 8 – 14 Dissolves in water to for H+ ions Dissolves in water to for OH+ ions

ACID BASE Reacts with metals Dissolves in water to for H+ ions

Neutralization
4
Neutralization Reactions
Neutralizations are a special type of double displacement reaction Acids and bases react together to always form a salt and water Acid Base Salt + Water Test pH of reactants with pH paper to show acid/base. Test pH of salt water after to show pH change Boil off water while they write the next note, to show that salt is formed.
5
The specific salt formed depends on the acid and base.
ie. HCl NaOH NaCl H2O (table salt) ie. Mg(OH)2 + H2SO MgSO H2O (Epson’s salt) pH of products?? The salt and water have a neutral pH
6
Useful Neutralization Reactions
1. Hair stylists use acids and bases in perms and curling.
7
2. Adding acids and baking soda to recipes causes cakes, biscuits and muffins to rise.
NaHCO3 + HCl → NaCl + H2CO3 H2CO3 → H2O + CO2
8
3. Most household cleaners are bases
3. Most household cleaners are bases. They neutralize the acids in fats and grease to make them easy to remove.
9
Base Spill Clean up activity
Obtain a small beaker and add 0.5cm of base (NaOH). Add phenothalein to indicate it’s a base. Use the pipettes to add HCl until it the pink goes away. This should be neutral. Test with pH paper to ensure. If it is not neutral, add either a base or acid until it becomes neutral (test with pH paper) Boil off water to see the salt.
