Neutralization Reactions
2
Neutralization Reactions
Occur when an acid and a base react to form products that have a pH closer to 7 than either of the reactants These products are usually an ionic compound (sometimes called a “salt”) and water
3
Predicting the Products
Example: Neutralization of hydrochloric acid with sodium hydroxide HCl (aq) + NaOH (aq) → H2O (l) + NaCl (aq) Follow the same general pattern of double displacement reaction AB + CD → AD + CB
4
General Chemical Equation
acid + base → water + ionic compound
5
Applications of Neutralization Reactions
Cleaning up chemical spills Antacids
6
Neutralization Practice:
Write the chemical equations for each of these acid base reactions: 1. hydrochloric acid and potassium hydroxide 2. sulfuric acid and potassium hydroxide
7
Neutralization in Action!
Video Clip from Fight Club Warning: This scene will contain foul language, please refrain from repeating within the class room! Thank you!
