7 Telecommunications Challenges
NETWORK INTEGRATION Multiple ICT services - with differing demands in terms of elasticity, QoS and contention management - running over a common application and over a common ICT cabling system UNIFIED COMMUNICATIONS Network integration on a global, “location independent” scale GRID COMPUTING Distributed computing whereby a "super and virtual computer" is composed of a cluster of networked, loosely coupled computers, acting in concert to perform very large tasks. ENERGY EFFICIENCY Demand for data centres to support telecommunications operator sites ENERGY PROFILING The management of total energy usage across the infrastructure NETWORK CONVERGENCE Different services (ICT, BCT, CCCB, PCMA etc.) being delivered over the same IP/Ethernet applications e.g. broadcast TV over IP (BCT service). Often resulting in common applications being delivered over multiple cabling systems albeit using the same types of cabling components

INTEGRATION and CONVERGENCE ICT Cabling Electrical cabling HBES Inc. CCCB NETWORK INTEGRATION To ensure that the CMA and its membership are fully represented in, and have influence on, in the development and implementation of Infrastructure standards To provide “users” with an independent and agnostic source of advise and guidance at key stages of network/infrastructure design

15 Access Networks OLD THINKING The Access Network serves the subscriber
Primary data function: Download Asymmetric service adequate NEW THINKING One subscriber serves another subscriber “Unified Communications” “Grid Computing” Primary data function: Download = Upload QoS for real-time delivery More symmetry required NETWORK INTEGRATION NETWORK CONVERGENCE

17 Energy Efficiency Initiatives
The energy consumption of the major operators exceeds that of Switzerland EE IOCG presentation The energy consumption of all ICT ~ 2% of total national usage ETSI “Energy Efficiency and Broadband Deployment” CENELEC “Green” data centres
