In this letter to the church in Rome Paul has challenged the Jewish (nationality) Christians and the Gentile Christians. In Romans 1:18-31 he informed the Gentiles that their unrighteousness was suppressing the truth. In Romans 2:27-28 he informed the Jews that their is no physical advantage over the Gentiles. In Romans 3:9-10 he also informed them that there is no actual division between themselves and the Gentiles because “none is righteous, no not one.” They were not superior to the Gentiles, in fact they were united based on sin. Sin made no distinction between Jew and Gentile for none are righteous. Having explained all that Paul then turns his attention to how these two groups can move from being universally united in sin to being universally united in righteousness. Starting in Romans 3:21 and going through Romans 5 Paul demonstrates three truths concerning this “universal Need” in righteousness. The first truth we noticed concerning this “Universal Need” for righteousness was… There was a New Law - Romans 3:21-31 We noticed the New Law’s relationship with the Old Law - Romans 3:21 We noticed the New Law’s relationship with all of mankind - Romans 3:22-23 The second truth we noticed was… This New Law justified people in the same way it always has - Romans 4:1-25 Whether we are talking about Abraham, Moses, or any of us we are all justified in the same way “through faith.” The third truth we will notice today concerning this “Universal Need” for righteousness is… This New Law that justifies people through faith comes with many benefits or “Faith Promises” (SLIDE)

The Word of God is filled with promises from God.
In fact this “New Law” we are under is based on “better promises” than the previous two laws (Hebrews 8:6). This is one reason Jesus states that the “least in the kingdom of God” i.e. the “church” is greater than the great John the Baptist (Matthew 11:11). However, Paul is not trying to prove this “New Law” is better than the Old Law in our text here, rather he is going to demonstrate the advantages or promises that are associated with faithfulness. Faithfulness has certain benefits or promises that are amazing and these promises should “unite everyone” under Christ, both Jew and Gentile. With that said let’s examine our first “promise.” (SLIDE) R O M A N S 5 :

PEACE WITH GOD R O M A N S 5 : 1 - 2 1
The word “peace” is found often in the book of Romans. It is found ten times starting in the very first chapter (Romans 1:7) and lastly mentioned in the last chapter (Romans 16:20). With the turmoil in the church between “Jew & Gentile” children of God, it makes since that Paul would stress something so vital to the Christian walk. Let’s look at what Paul says here in our text. “Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Justification through faith brings the promise of peace with God. Everyone seeks peace in their lives… It is only through our Lord Jesus Christ that we can find peace with God. (SLIDE) R O M A N S 5 : 1

“For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility” When we are saved by grace, which is Jesus (we will look at that later), through faith Jesus Himself becomes our peace. Jesus is our “peace of mind” so to speak, which is why…(SLIDE) E P H E S I A N S 2 : 1 4

“Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Faith promises a peace with God through our Messiah that guards our hearts and minds. How is it that we find peace in God once we have been justified by faith? R O M A N S 5 : 1

“Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God.” By knowing we have obtained access to grace i.e. Jesus the Christ. Jesus is the “free gift of God” that was given to all!!! (SLIDE) R O M A N S 5 : 2

“for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus” Some translations of verse 24 have “justified freely.” The word “freely” there simply means “something freely given” i.e. “gift.” What free gift was given by God? PEACE WITH GOD R O M A N S 5 : 1 - 2 1
When either Jew or Gentile is justified by faith they are united by the “faith promise” of peace with God. This peace’s foundation is in the access we have to grace or our Savior. Access, under the New Law, has not been this good since Adam and Eve walked with God in the garden of Eden. No wander this peace with God surpasses all understanding!!! Paul, then explains yet another promise for those that have been justified by Faith. (SLIDE)

SUPPORT IN AFFLICTION R O M A N S 5 : 1 - 2 1
With “peace of mind” comes another promise which is “support in our afflictions.” (SLIDE)

“Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5 and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.” When we, those justified by faith, suffer afflictions it has a positive effect on us. Why, because we turn to the Word written on our hearts that was given to us through the Holy Spirit. (SLIDE) R O M A N S 5 :

“And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, 20 knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation. 21 For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.” 2 P E T E R 1 :

SUPPORT IN AFFLICTION R O M A N S 5 : 1 - 2 1
Whether Jew or Gentile, all those justified by faith have a “faith promise” and that promise is that they will be supported in their afflictions through the New Law i.e. the Law of Christ. So those that are justified by faith and are living faithfully are promised… Peace with God from our unprecedented access to Christ and support while going through difficult times because of the law that is written on our hearts that leads us through those times into hope. Paul, having explained this, then bolsters these promises with more evidence by writing on the…(SLIDE)

CERTAINTY IN SALVATION R O M A N S 5 : 1 - 2 1
Why would Paul need to “bolster” his previous thoughts on the promises from faith? To demonstrate to the Jewish children of God the “Universal Need For Righteousness” i.e. for both Jew and Gentile. Everything Paul, inspired by God, has written from chapter 2 through chapter 5 has been for this purpose to show that the Jews have the same need for righteousness as Gentiles. This is bore out in our remaining text. (SLIDE)

“but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. 10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.” When we put our faith in our Messiah, as the justifier, we are guaranteed salvation whether Jew or Gentile. Why, because when this happens we are reconciled to God through Christ. Everyone that believes Jesus is the Messiah (John 3:16) and obeys His word (John 14:15) will be justified and reconciled to God. Why, because they taken hold of the free gift of God, i.e. Jesus. Paul goes on to illustrate this further by contrasting Adam and Jesus. (SLIDE) R O M A N S 5 :

“But the free gift is not like the trespass
“But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man’s trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. 16 And the free gift is not like the result of that one man’s sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought justification.” Paul shows clearly that the “grace of God” or “free gift of God” brought justification. Paul would say it like this in Ephesians 2:8 “For by grace you have been saved through faith…” This gift was not for the Jews or the ones that adhered to the Law of Moses alone. When the Jewish children of God brought along their past baggage it caused a problem in the church in Rome. It was causing a division between their own brethren. Brothers and sisters we must make sure we do not bring our own past baggage in either. We all have pasts but in Christ Jesus we were all made “NEW.” We all were given a fresh start by our Creator. Let us make certain we remember the faith promises given to all of us and let us unite in them always!!! R O M A N S 5 :
