Receive Guided by the Spirit, Simeon came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him what was customary under the law, Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying, ‘Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel.’ From the Gospel according to Luke, chapter 2, verses 27 to 32

Engage The account of Jesus being brought as a baby to the Temple appears in the Gospel of Luke (Chapter 2, verses 22 to 38). At the Temple two devout people proclaimed that this child is the Christ, the Messiah, their names were Simeon and Anna. Today many Christians celebrate this event on the 2nd February and it is often called ‘Candlemas’. This name came from the time when the candles that were to be used in the church for the coming year were blessed at a special celebration.

Engage Video suggestion … A dramatic retelling of the story - Some discussion ideas … How can we shine ‘light’ in our world (think about issues of injustice)? How did Jesus cause division (think about issues of conscience, rules, authority)? Discussion techniques - Go back to the Bible passage ask “How does the theme link with the Bible passage?” Discuss the question in pairs for 30 seconds then invite a response from each pair. Use quick-fire answers e.g. throw a soft bean bag / toy to a student, when they answer they throw it back and you quickly throw to another student. Simplify the question - Invite quick one-word answers, write them on the board, then reflect on the answers – see connections. Activity suggestion … … Make candle shapes and write prayers to take home or keep in your planners.

Respond Amen Almighty and ever-living God, clothed in majesty,
[Reflect for a minute on the worship theme and our engagement …] Almighty and ever-living God, clothed in majesty, whose beloved Son was this day presented in the Temple, in substance of our flesh: grant that we may be presented to you with pure and clean hearts, by your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen Prayer / reflection technique – Give a summary of the theme and any responses that students may have made, then invite everyone to be still (remind no books open etc – lessen distraction). To pray or reflect on today’s worship. Be quiet for one minute. Then say the prayer …
