Titration Stations
2
Station 1 What is the pH of a 0.15 M solution of acetic acid? (Ka=1.8 x 10 -5)
3
Station 2 Acetic Acid is titrated with 0.10 M KOH.
What volume of base is needed to neutralize a 10 mL sample of 0.15 M acetic acid?
4
Station 3 Write a balanced equation for the neutralization of acetic acid with KOH. What chemicals are in the flask at the equivalence point? How many moles of acetic acid are in the 10 mL of 0.15 M acetic acid? How many moles are of acetate are in the flask at the equivalence point? What is the total volume of solution (in Liters) at the equivalence point? What is the concentration of acetate at the equivalence point?
5
Station 4 Calculate the pH of the solution at the equivalence point.
6
Station 5 What volume of base is half-way to the equivalence point?
What do you know about the pH half-way to the equivalence point? (hint: think of H-H equation) What is the pH half-way to the equivalence point? Plot this third point on your titration curve.
7
Station 6 You’ve added 6.5 mL of KOH.
How many moles of acetic acid are in 10 mL of 0.15 M acetic acid? How many moles of hydroxide are in 6.5 mL of 0.10 M KOH? What is the total volume in liters? Use this information to FIRST fill in an ICE table for the neutralization process. THEN do a second ICE table for the equilibrium process (or an H-H calculation) What is the pH?
8
Station 7 You’ve added 8.5 mL of KOH.
How many moles of acetic acid are in 10 mL of 0.15 M acetic acid? How many moles of hydroxide are in 8.5 mL of 0.10 M KOH? What is the total volume in liters? Use this information to FIRST fill in an ICE table for the neutralization process. THEN do a second ICE table for the equilibrium process (or an H-H calculation) What is the pH?
9
Station 8 You’ve added 20 mL of KOH to the solution.
How many moles of acetic acid are in 10 mL of 0.15 M acetic acid? How many moles of hydroxide are in 20 mL of 0.10 mL of 0.10 M KOH? How many moles of excess hydroxide are in solution? What is the total volume in liters? What is the pH?
10
Station 9 Use the pH values and mL of KOH added from the other stations to sketch a titration curve.
