Mark 6:7–13 And He was going around the villages teaching. 7 And He summoned the twelve and began to send them out in pairs, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits; 8 and He instructed them that they should take nothing for their journey, except a mere staff—no bread, no bag, no money in their belt— 9 but to wear sandals; and He added, “Do not put on two tunics.”

Mark 6:7–13 10 And He said to them, “Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave town. 11 Any place that does not receive you or listen to you, as you go out from there, shake the dust off the soles of your feet for a testimony against them.”

Advance the Kingdom: Depend on Christ!
Getting involved in the work of advancing Christ’s Kingdom is kind of like having a baby. If you wait until you are ready, you will never get started.

“A genuine call to ministry always calls us to that for which we are not adequately prepared. It is only in awareness of such that the Christian experiences the presence and promise of Jesus Christ, and learns to depend not on human capabilities but on [Christ] and the power of the proclamation to authenticate itself” (Edwards, 183).

He sends the disciples on a trial, short-term mission trip designed to teach them to rely on the power and will of God.

Sermon in a Sentence To advance Christ’s Kingdom: 1) we must go as a team and in His authority (6b–7); 2) we must rely on God to provide for our needs (8–9); 3) we must leave the results to God (10–11), and 4) we must preach the need for repentance and do the work of the Kingdom (12–13).

It is encouraging to know Jesus uses the disciples in spite of their record. They have impeded Jesus’ mission (1:36–39), become exasperated with Him (4:38; 5:31), and even opposed Him (3:21).

Everyone wants to be successful, and when we go solo, we are tempted to either abandon the mission when it gets difficult or change the message of the gospel to ensure we appear successful.

“The twelve are not sent to do a new work, but to continue and extend the work begun by Jesus.” The emphasis is “not on innovation but the full representation of the One who commissioned them” (Edwards, 179).

Going as a team helps us accurately represent Jesus by not relying on ourselves, but upon God who builds the team and gives the harvest.

The team helps ensure accountability, and Christ’s authority gives us confidence that we represent a King and a Kingdom that Satan cannot destroy.

2. We must rely on God to provide for our needs (8–9).

The items symbolically declare the disciples are ambassadors of a new and greater exodus – they come with the commission of the King who frees His people from their sins and death.

The items the disciples are allowed to take on their mission to Israel (a tunic, belt, sandals, and the staff in their hand) are the exact items the Israelites were allowed to take during their escape from slavery in Egypt. (Exod 12:11)

“We must not place [our] trust in [our] supplies and training but rather in the One who sends [us]” (Edwards, 181).

The people to whom we are going must see that our dependence is upon Christ who sends us.

3. We must leave the results to God (10–11).

“Do not dishonor the kindness of a lesser home by moving to a nicer one and thereby become an offense to the gospel” (Akin, 125).

We must be content with God’s provision so people may clearly see the Christ we proclaim.

Rejection of Jesus is a rejection of the one true God.

Jesus eliminates, “the presumption of salvation on the basis of ethnicity, nation, or race. ‘For they are not all Israel who are descended from Israel’” (Rom 9:6) (Edwards).

When we go with the gospel alone as our hope, we can be assured that the people are not rejecting us, but Christ.

4. We must preach the need for repentance and do the work of the Kingdom (12–13).

We must not only live in dependence upon God; we must also proclaim dependence upon God and work in dependence upon His power.

“The time has come.…The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!” (Mark 1:15) -Jesus

The church must live as those who are truly depending upon Christ, and we must preach dependence upon Christ for life, meaning, purpose, and salvation as our only hope.

When we live on mission in dependence upon God, His power freely flows through us to overcome demonic opposition and advance His Kingdom.

The message we preach and the work we do must come from the power and authority of the King who is sending us.

“Everything, even the poverty and simplicity of the messenger, indeed even the courage to be rejected, must conform to the Word that affirms that God is infinitely more important than all else” (Edwards, 183).
