The Layers of the Earth
2
The Earth is divided into 4 main areas:
Inner Core Outer Core Mantle Crust
3
The Crust The Earth’s crust is like the skin of an apple. It is very thin compared to the other three layers. The crust makes up 1% of the Earth. There are 2 types of crust: 1. Continental Crust (under continents) 2. Oceanic Crust (under oceans) Oceanic Crust is more dense!
4
More about the crust The crust of the Earth is broken into many pieces called tectonic plates. These plates move slowly in different directions due to convection currents.
5
The Mantle The mantle is the layer below the crust.
The mantle is the thickest layer of the Earth. The mantle is divided into two regions: the upper and lower sections.
6
Parts of the Mantle The upper mantle and the crust together make up the lithosphere. The upper mantle is partly solid Beneath the lithosphere is the asthenosphere. The asthenosphere is partly melted
8
Outer Core The core of the Earth is like a ball of very hot metals.
The outer core is liquid. The outer core is made up of iron and nickel and is very dense. 4, 000 F
9
Inner Core Pressure is so great that the liquid is pressed into a solid. 4,000 miles deep from the surface of Earth. 800 miles thick. 9000°F
