1 Earth’s Internal Heat and Structure

2 Homework for next time Bring an appropriate picture from a magazine, printed from the internet, or newspaper. It should be larger… like the size of a piece of paper.

3 What is the inside of the earth like?
4300 C!!! That’s Hot! Convert it to Fahrenheit and you get 7700 degrees!!!! Yowza!

4 Here is the question… Why is the core of the earth so hot
Here is the question… Why is the core of the earth so hot? Where did all that heat come from? With your table, talk about this and see if you can come up with a theory as to how the earth got so hot. You have about 2 minutes.

5 Here is a clue… Watch this video

6 Radioactive Decay… How it works
When radioactive elements decay, they give off heat… lots of heat. This chunk of plutonium is glowing red-hot because of the heat that comes from it’s radioactive decay. Glowing Red Hot!

7 Which radioactive elements contribute to this decay?
The primary sources of earth’s internal heat are: Uranium Thorium Potassium

8 Another source of Earth’s internal heat is called heat of formation.

9 College level physics problem…
A 15.0g bullet traveling horizontally at 865 m/s passes through at a tank containing 13.5kg of water and emerges with a speed of 534m/s. What is the maximum temperature increase that the water could have as a result of this event? Kinetic Energy = ½ M x V^2 Bullet Before = 5,611,687 Joules Bullet After = 2,138,670 Joules Difference = 3,473,017 Joules =.96 Kw-hours You could run a refrigerator for an hour with this much energy. This energy is converted to heat in the water.

10 During the early stages of earth, there were many impacts from meteorites and asteroids. All of their kinetic energy was converted to heat energy upon impact.

11 Check for Understanding…
List and describe the two main sources of earth’s internal heat How did/do meteorites and asteroids heat up the earth?

12 Earth’s Internal Structure
The internal structure of the earth can be shown based on physical properties or chemical properties. Chemical Properties Physical Properties

13 The whole basis of Plate Tectonics is…
Because the asthenosphere is a “Plastic” layer, the tectonic plates that float on top of the asthenosphere that make up the surface of the Earth can move around on top of this weak “plastic” layer. Crust- Tectonic Plates Make up the Crust Asthenosphere- Weak “plastic” layer, compare it to silly putty that can kind of “flow”

14 Make 2 drawings on one sheet of paper
Make 2 drawings on one sheet of paper. Make these nice so that you can reference them for tests and such. Physical

15 How do we know that there are different physical and chemical layers in the earth?

16 Seismic Waves!
