Objective: We will analyze the impact of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo on the American National Identity by participating in an interactive lecture. Do Now: What would you do if the U.S.A. was defeated by another nation, and you were told you were no longer American. Instead, you’ve become a citizen of this new nation. What would your expectations be of this new nation?

California • Americans in California, following Texas’ example, overthrew the Mexicans in 1846, declaring the independent nation of the Bear Flag Republic. • Soon afterwards, California joined the United States.

This flag, raised at Sonoma on June 14, 1846, was destroyed in the 1906 Great Earthquake and Fire. The star imitated the lone star of Texas. A grizzly bear represented the many bears seen in the state. The Bear Flag was replaced by the American flag.

• Mexico recognized the Texas-Mexico border as the Rio Grande. • Mexico ceded the Mexican Cession to the United States. • Today, the Mexican Cession are the states of CA, NV, UT, and parts of AZ, NM, CO, and WY. Gadsden Purchase The United States bought southern NM and AZ for $10 million for minerals and land to build a railroad. • The United States paid Mexico $15 million.
