5 Definition Period when Europeans began exploring Africa, Americas and Asia Occurred 1400s – 1700s

6 Motives for Exploration
1) God European Christians believed it was their duty to convert people “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” Matthew 28

7 Motives for Exploration
2) Gold Europeans wanted new wealth, especially gold Wanted to increase trade with Asia

3) Glory Explorers wanted adventure and fame

9 Contact with Africans Europeans made trading posts in Africa
Sailed around Africa to Asia, brought back spices for huge profit

Christopher Columbus: Looking for quicker route to Asia Sailed west across Atlantic Europeans didn’t know the Americas existed

Spanish took over Caribbean, Central & South America Forced natives to convert to Christianity, tortured & killed them if they didn’t Enslaved natives

New foods (corn and potatoes) increase population

21 Effects on Americas Diseases (smallpox, flu) kill ~90% of Native Americans Survivors enslaved by Spanish conquistadors (explorers), driven off land by English colonists Some Native Americans fought against Spanish, English
