1 Why did America’s 1st cities develop along rivers?
Rivers were America’s 1st super highways and they were used for transportation & trade. Remember the eastern U.S. had very few roads and it was heavily forested. Such as New York City on the Hudson River.

3 Why did Jefferson want to buy Louisiana?
Jefferson wanted to insure that American farmers living west of the Appalachian Mts. had free access to the Mississippi River, New Orleans, and the Gulf of Mexico to ship their crops back to the Eastern U.S. Images of Thomas Jefferson

4 Who was Napoleon? A French general, who seized power in France ending the French Revolution. The French Revolution caused the overthrow and deaths of the French King and Queen Napoleon on his pony. The Guillotine in action.

5 Why was Napoleon willing to sell Louisiana?
The slave revolt on the island of Haiti forced Napoleon to recognize their independence. This made him give up his dream of a French empire in the Americas. He also needed $ to equip his army, as he sought to conquer Europe. Haiti’s Flag

6 Terms of the Deal Completed in 1803
U.S. pays France $15 million for the Louisiana Purchase, which included the city of New Orleans. It doubles the size of the United States The price will work out to about $0.03 an acre. U.S. & France signing the deal.
