1 Circulation Data: Health Sciences Library FY13
Zack Lane ReCAP Coordinator July 2013 ReCAP Columbia University

2 Health Sciences Circulation Data
Looks at HSL circulation activity Is only one measure of collection usage Presents data both HSL specific and system- wide Circulation Desk uses several happening locations: Health Sciences Circ, Health Sciences Reserves, Butler, and BorrowDirect HSL Library data is available from the implementation of Voyager, July 2003 No usable data for non-circulating collections ReCAP Columbia University

3 HSL Happening Location
Data from HSL Happening Location only (includes Reserves) Five primary types of circulation activity: charge, discharge, renewal, recall and hold Renewals and recalls are done in the OPAC happening location, dynamically by patrons themselves Circulation data for special collections pertains only to exceptions: Interlibrary loan Exhibits Scanning ReCAP Columbia University

6 Observations Total volume of charges down overall since FY04
40.5% decline from FY04 to FY13 Compare to 32.3% decline system-wide Charge volume fluctuated FY04-FY08 Since FY09 the total volume consistently rose by a small margin until FY13 Larger volume of discharge in FY08 may be attributable to project processing collections for transfer to ReCAP ReCAP Columbia University

7 Circ Activity by Collection
Data for major collections in the HSL Happening Location Borrow Direct data included only past 2 years 47.0% are for reserves collections “HSL Other” includes hsl, mcrs hsl, over hsl, medi And others Data unavailable for non-circulating collections ReCAP Columbia University

10 Circ Activity by Sub-Collection
Detailed Patron Group info for General stacks (hsl, stx) Reserves (hsl, res) HSL Offsite(off, hsl) Noticeable decline is stacks activity when renovation began Increase in usage of Offsite collections as they become available for request (after transfer from Brewster) ReCAP Columbia University

14 HSL Circulation by Patron Group
All status patron/pseudopatron charges are excluded Special patron group HSA is included Both REG and GRD show significant declines over the past decade – primarily undergraduates and graduates OFF (faculty) usage has been steady Drop in undergraduate borrowing between FY07 and FY08 is attributable to intercampus delivery ReCAP Columbia University

18 Monthly Circulation by Patron Group
Usage pattern for graduate students demonstrates more activity in Fall than Spring term Proportionally more use by undergraduates during the summer Undergraduates have declining proportional of charges over the past decade ReCAP Columbia University

22 Circulation by Patron Group
Proportionally more activity to OFF (faculty) in FY13 than the past decade Increasing use by visitors ReCAP Columbia University

25 Observations Patron Group definitions have changed:
Adjunct faculty : in 2008 grad students were given primary group OFF instead of GRD Almost 85% of all charges are to graduate students and faculty in FY13 Graduate and undergraduate charges have been declining Peak borrowing period is Fall semester Faculty activity is consistent throughout the calendar year ReCAP Columbia University

26 HSL Circulation by Patron Group
Different patterns of usage by patron group Grads and Undergrads use Reserves often Faculty drawing much material from Morningside Campus Heavy borrowing by graduate students in fall compared to spring may indicate adjustment to med school – “learning how to study” ReCAP Columbia University
