EQ: How can we apply solving equations to REAL LIFE?
Agenda: Story Time  Quick Review of Solving equations and proportions Solving Equations Activity Homework: Bring back Parent Signature Sheet 1 Word Problem (1, 3, or 4)

WARM UP: Solve the following:
x + 7 = 27 3j = -21

Review: Solving Equations

Things to remember: In the following equation we call “m” the _____________? 3m + 1 = 7 What is the definition of a variable? What are some examples of common variables we use in algebra? We want the variable to be by itself on one side of the equation at the end

Help me solve the following equations:

Worksheet on Solving Equations

Why do we need to know how to solve equations?
WORD PROBLEMS!!  Let’s transform this word problem into an equation we can solve. On our way home I noticed my older brother was really into the his favorite song on the radio and put the car on cruise control so he could “jam out” to the song. We went exactly 45 mph for the full length of the song, 3 minutes. I was curious and wanted to know how far we traveled during the song?

On our way home I noticed my older brother was really into the his favorite song on the radio and put the car on cruise control so he could “jam out” to the song. We went exactly 45 mph for the full length of the song, 3 minutes. I was curious and wanted to know how far we traveled during the song? What information is important? How is this information related? What should our equation look like? How do we solve this equation?

You solve this one… There were 228 students that went on the field trip to Atlanta last year. Ms. Sawicki got 3 charter busses and because of an early college class, 6 students had to ride down with a parent. How many students were on each bus? What information is important? 228 students total, 3 charter busses, 6 extra students in car What are we solving for? What variable should we use? The number of students on each bus; s = students on bus What should our equation look like? 228 = 3s + 6 or 3s + 6 = 228 either will work How do we solve this equation? 3s + 6 = s = 222 s = 74 ÷ 3 ÷3

Let’s go the other way… Turn this equation into a word problem… 3m – 6 = 36 First we may want to solve it to see if our answer is going to be positive or negative, so our word problem makes since. m = 14 Let’s let “m” stand for monsters 3m means 3 times as many monsters. - 6 means 6 of them went away or were lost for an overall total of 36 So…The directors for the movie Monsters Inc. held 2 days of auditions. On the second day of casting they had exactly 3 times as many monsters show up as they did on the first day, and then at the last minute 6 of the monsters got scared and ran off, leaving a total of 36 at the end of the second day. How many monsters showed up on the first day?

Let’s do this one together…

Partner Activity Wave to the person across from you…they are your partner for this activity Miss Williams will give you your problem number from the worksheet earlier…write this number at the top of your paper. You and your partner must be creative and transform your boring equation into an exciting word problem. Once you are finished have either someone else at your table or Miss W check your word problem to make sure we can set it up correctly. Once you are sure you have an AWESOME word problem place it in your class tray.

Homework Choose either 1, 3, OR 4 from the worksheet and create another word problem. Be sure to write the word “homework” under the chosen equation on your worksheet or rewrite the equation on the back of your homework paper.
