Broad base VIMP for the same reason. Learn well Technical Concepts, maths, processes, instruments, packages. Study good courses more than min-audit, sit-through will also do if feasible.

3. General awareness from fellow R/S about latest dev in allied areas.
Enjoy and encourage such interaction-regular basis. Help each other & learn.
From beginning, think long term: What to do after Ph.D.? What is required there? Planning brings focus on right efforts to reach goal. Be flexible with options.
Changing plan with experience is perfectly fine.
Just good no of papers insufficient for job. In addition to things mentioned above, excellent English communication skills, confident, pleasant, warm personality also imp. 4 years period imp for this.

Nowadays, interviews on phone, Skype common. Must know & adapt to the limitations. Be patient, allow other to finish. Seek clarifications. Pause before answering.
