Density
2
Classwork Write up today’s experiment called Measuring Density in Physic’s copy Main sections Higher level only - (ii) Measuring the density of a liquid like water Pg 116 (iii) Measuring the density of a solid like a stone Pg 112 (i) Measuring the density of a rectangular solid Pg 110
3
Objectives measure mass and volume of a variety of solids and liquids and hence determine their densities
4
Density Density is the mass of 1cm3 of a substance.
It is measured in g/cm3 Use the formula Density =Mass Volume
5
Activity Can you explain this?
Take a sheet of aluminium foil 30cm by 30 cm. cut it in two. Squeeze one piece tightly into a ball. Make a ‘boat’ out of the other piece. Put both into a basin of water. Can you explain this? Explain what you observe
6
Archimedes is famous for discovering that a king’s crown, supposedly made of solid gold, was in fact made of lead covered with gold. How do think he proved his case?
7
Think about it.. How could you prove that a barman was watering down the whiskey without you having to drink any of it?
8
Density and Floatation
The most dense object sinks the furthet and the least dense object floats on the top
