1 You need your AVNs today!
Daily Starter Q: Reflect back to our Alka Seltzer rocket experiment from last Friday. How would you improve or change the experiment? What variables would you test? What variables would you keep constant? You need your AVNs today!

2 Unit: Space Topic: Earth Movement Page: # 607
I CAN… Explain day and night and time of day by applying the concept of Earth’s rotation and revolution

3 Focus ? Why do we have day and night and why does the amount of daylight change throughout the year?)

4 Engage What is wrong with these pictures?

5 Explain The earth rotates on its axis.
It takes about 24 hours for the earth to make a full rotation. This is why we have day and night.

6 Explain The earth also revolves around the sun.
It takes about 365 days (or one year) for the earth to make it all the way around the sun.

7 Explain So, what is an axis? What is the center of earth?
An axis is the imaginary pole going through the center of earth. What is the center of earth? The point around which earth rotates.

8 Good… so this is what the earth’s axis looks like, right?

9 And the earth revolves around the sun like this, right?

10 WRONG!

11 Earth’s Axis: Not So Straight!
The earth’s axis is tilted about 23.5 degrees from vertical. Axis 23.5˚

12 So, the earth’s revolution around the sun looks like this.

13 What’s the big deal about a tilted axis?
Without a tilted axis, we would not have changing amounts of daylight and night!

14 If the earth’s axis was straight up and down…
We would still have different weather conditions across the face of the Earth, but at any point on the surface the weather would always be the same (no more seasons!).

15 If the earth’s axis was straight up and down…
Cold Cool Warm Hot

16

17 Brain Dump 1. What do we call the spinning of the Earth on its axis?
2. How long does it take for the Earth to make one full rotation on its axis? 3. How long does it take for the Earth to make a full revolution around the sun? 4.Why does it look like the sun is moving across the sky?

18 Reflection What would be different if the Earth was not tilted on an axis?
