Brief Outline Astronomy is a portal to understanding our origins and future Beauty; images Nature’s Art Places us in Universe, time and space Humbling and awe-inspiring Addresses curiosity about origins of matter, life The Cosmos is mind-bogglingly vast and varied Yet we are connected to it in surprising ways It deserves our attention, wonder, and awe! Background CASC conference and talk on “Enhancing Canada’s Science Culture” with Ivan Semeniuk and John Percy, Prof. Emeritus, UT Astronomy. Also design ideas from St. Clair College Teams

Records comet strike that caused Younger Dryas ca. 13,000 yrs ago?
10
Evidence comet or asteroid strike caused Younger Dryas period
Pt levels increased by factor of 100 Pt/Al ratio very high (so origin not terrestrial) (Publication August 2013, Phys. Org. report.)

Galileo( 1564-1642) Made a crude telescope
and observed Sun, Moon, Venus, Jupiter, the Milky Way,...

Stellar Mass by Grav. Lensing
June 7, 2017: mass of white dwarf measured directly for first time. Dwarf Stein 2051B, 18 LY from Earth, has a mass 68% of the solar mass. Next: Red dwarf proxima Centauri, 4.25 LY distant.

Gravitational Waves: new ear on the Universe!
Third black-hole merger seen by LIGO, on Jan 4, 2017, confirmed June 1, 2017: 49 Msolar in sphere of 270 km radius (1 radiated), 3 GLY distant. First detection Oct 2015: 2nd detection Dec 26, 2015. Spins not aligned.

LIGO: Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory
The general locations of the LIGO Hanford and LIGO Livingston interferometers. (Credit: Caltech/MIT/LIGO Lab) Add Virgo in Italy for full triangulation and source location. Able to discriminate mirror displacements of 0.01% of proton radius!
17
Extreme Optical Interferometry
LIGO interferometer FabryPerot cavities: ~280 reflections ~1120 km arms Sensitivity limit ~ m (proton radius ~ m)

Quantum Entanglement in Space: China 2017, 1200 km

Update: Now n-star collisions
Visible in both gravity and multiple em waves. Affirms speed of gravity waves as c . a Kilonova! R-process production of heavy elements (100 earth masses of Au, more of Pt!) Triangulation LIGO (Hanford, Livingston), Virgo Origin of at least some gamma bursts Aug. 17 observation, Oct. 16 announcement
