5 Learning Goals LG 703: Students will be able to apply and extend previous understandings of operations to multiply and divide rational numbers.

6 What are we doing today? Today I am working with integers.
So that I can divide integers with same and different signs. I’ll know I’ve got it if I can accurately determine the product of the following expression:

7 Let’s Review Multiplication Rules
Multiply the integers Count the negative signs to know if your answer is positive or negative. Even number of negative signs = Positive Answer Odd number of negative signs = Negative Answer

8 The Rules: Same as Multiplication!
Division can be written in two ways: ÷ or Fraction (top divided by bottom) We call the answer to a division problem a quotient For 2 factors: Like signs = POSITIVE Unlike signs = NEGATIVE

10 Dividing Integers – Page 44
An easy trick to remember this is:

11 Dividing Integers – Page 44

12 Dividing Integers – Page 44
Can we divide 0 by -9?

13 Your Turn– Page 44

16 An Important Note What if you’re given a problem like this? 10 – (-8)
-2 Order of operations tells us to do division first, but in fraction form, we do everything on top first. 18 -2 The answer is -9

17 Exit Slip Quick Write: How are the rules for multiplying and dividing integers similar to adding and subtracting integers? How are the rules different?

18 Homework Page 46, #15-18 Due at the start of next class
