Population growth rate
Population change Learning objectives: Describe and explain: How has the world’s population changed over time? What are the main factors influencing population change? Key words: Population Population growth rate Migration
2
Earth clock What is the population at the start of the lesson?
Write it down in your books!
3
Task: Draw a line graph to show population growth from 1804-1999
Do not forget: Title, labels, accuracy! Do the X axis from 1800 to 2100!
4
Natural population change
Overall population change The rate of natural increase: Birth rate – the death rate Usually this is calculated per 1000 Therefore as a percentage you need to divide by 10. e.g. natural population increase is 40.2 per thousand The percentage is 4.02%
5
Overall population change
Migration: The movement of people from one country to another. The number of people will either be ± or – depending on whether more people have left or arrived! Birth rate 9.88 births/1,000 population (2014 est.) Death rate 9 deaths/1,000 population (2014 est.) Net migration rate 7.24 migrant(s)/1,000 population (2014 est.)
6
Earth clock What is the population at the start of the lesson?
Write it down in your books!
7
Malta: BR: 10.3 PER 100 DR: 8.3 per 1000 Net migration: +2.0
Calculate the natural population change and overall population change for Malta Answer: NIC: 2 per 1000 = 0.2% OC: = 4.0per 10000 =0.4% Malta: BR: 10.3 PER 100 DR: 8.3 per 1000 Net migration: +2.0
8
The demographic transition model
l/o: To explain how we can use the demographic transition model to predict population trend What does this graph show us? Why do you think this is happening?
10
Key terms: Birth rate: Death rate: Natural population increase:
Life expectancy:
