7 Is this a good way to determine the school order?
Mr. Adams is going to order pizza for all 900 RMS students. He wants to know how many cheese and how many pepperoni to order. He doesn’t have time to ask all 900 students what they want, so he asks fifteen 6th graders, 7th graders, and 8th graders. What could go wrong? Is this a good way to determine the school order?

8 Math Terms Population: Sample:
The entire set of objects from which data might be collected Sample: A subset (smaller group) of the population

9 A: When the sample is representative of that population
Q: When is it appropriate to draw generalizations/inferences from a population sample? A: When the sample is representative of that population Q: What does that mean? A: It means the sample reflects the total population Q: How do we get a “good” (reflective)sample? 1) Random selection 2) from the corresponding population 3) where the sample size is just right – like Goldilocks

10 4) Three randomly chosen students in period 1.
Example A: Mr. Jordan wanted to find out if his students liked his math class. Which best represents a sample. 1) All the students that have an A in his class 2) 10 sixth graders, 10 seventh graders, &10 eighth graders 3) All 84 students 4) Three randomly chosen students in period 1. 5) 20 randomly chosen students, 4 from each period. Random selection from the corresponding population where the sample size is just right -Goldilocks.

11 3) All Americans in the Ramstein & Kaiserslautern area
Example B: Mr. Jordan was curious about the amount of gas used by Americans living in Germany. Which best represents a sample? 1) The people living in his neighborhood 2) 50 American using the gas station on base 3) All Americans in the Ramstein & Kaiserslautern area 4) 5 Americans using the gas station on base. 5) 50 Ramstein Middle School teachers. Random selection from the corresponding population where the sample size is just right -Goldilocks.

13 Home visits by census officials were once the norm, but now the census is conducted primarily through the U.S. Postal Service. Each household in the United States receives in the mail a copy of the census questionnaire to be completed by its head of household who then mails it back to the Census Bureau. Home visits are paid only to those individuals who do not return the questionnaire by the specified deadline.
