9. What is a thesis statement?
A thesis statement is a complete sentence that contains a debatable idea about a topic.
A thesis statement must do these three things:
MUST be an assertion about your topic.
MUST be your opinion about your topic.
MUST be a complete sentence.
REMEMBER DO NOT USE 1ST OR 2ND PERSON PRONOUNS IN YOUR WRITING (you, I, me, us, we, our, your).

10. What is a thesis statement?
tells the reader how you will interpret the significance of the subject matter under discussion.
tells the reader what to expect from the rest of the paper *sneak peek: for example (movie trailers)

11. Important: Your thesis
Statement MUST have a
“so what”.
Why is your assertion important?
Why should the audience care about your argument?
Go beyond saying John proctor is bad and Abigail Williams is good.

12. Avoid using statements like:
Instead of this: “In this paper, I will discuss how John Proctor is a good man.”
“This essay will discuss”
“My essay will talk about”
“I will argue that”
“I am going to write about”
Why should you avoid those statements?

Verb: a word that expresses action or a state of being and is necessary to make a statement.
Transitive verb: is followed by a direct object (a word/words that answer the question what?
Intransitive verb: is not followed by a direct object.
Linking verb: links or joins the subject of a sentence with a noun, pronoun, or adjective that identifies or describes the subject. (A linking verb does not show action).
Auxiliary verb: helps the main verb express time by forming the various tenses.

18. Verbs -Primary characteristic of a verb is its ability to express time
Present tense: They watch the race together
Past tense: They watched the race together.
Future tense: They will watch the race together.

19. Action verbs - Tells what someone or something should do -some action verbs express physical action, others express mental action.
Physical action: Josiah waved the signal flag.
Mental action: He hoped for success.

20. Transitive verb ex) the batter swung the bat confidently
Transitive verb ex) the batter swung the bat confidently. [the action verb swung is followed by the noun bat, which answer the question “swung what”?

21. Intransitive verb -The batter swung wildly
Intransitive verb -The batter swung wildly. [The verb is followed by a word that tells how something is done.]
How do you decide if a verb in a sentence is transitive or intransitive?
Ask what? After the verb, if the answer is given in the sentence the verb is transitive.
If the answer is not given in the sentence, the verb is intransitive.

22. Linking verbs -be in all its forms-am, is, was, were-is the most commonly used linking verb.
