Last lesson we looked at who the redeemers were and what they did, this lesson we want to look at what their motives were for doing what they did.

3. RECAP: who were the redeemers?
Last lesson we looked at opposition to Radical Reconstruction and redemption. Before we start to look at the motives, lets see what you can remember?
Task: Try and complete the following diagram you have been given. You only have 10 minutes.
Now pass it on to the person opposite you on your table to try and add more information
You must now pass your sheet to at least 2 more people but they can not be on your table and each person must be sat at a different table.

4. What are the different motives behind the redeemers?
Next, we need to see what the reasons were for people opposing Radical Reconstruction and the motives for doing what they did in the South.
TASK: On your whiteboards make a list of all the different reasons why people in the South would oppose Reconstruction
Some of the different reasons include:
Racist attitudes
Economic problems
Response to corruption
Idea of ‘home-rule’ (similar to state rights)
Determined to resist Northern military occupation.
TASK: Write these down in the order of importance as to what you think the main reason is. Explain your view as it stands now.

5. What evidence is there to support the different motives?
Now that we know the different motives behind the opposition, we need to see what examples we have to support that this were the case.
TASK 1: You have each been one of the motives to look at and some information with regards to it. I would like you to create a teaching resource to show how your motive was key in driving opposition against Reconstruction. You will then use this to teach other groups when they come to visit your desk shortly.
TASK 2: On the worksheet you have been given, fill in the relevant box on the motive with examples to support it and then given it a mark out of 5 for how much you think it was a key motive for driving opposition.

10. Redemption and the Redeemers
The situation in the South
What is redemption

In the context of southern politics, the term Redemption refers to the overthrow or defeat of Radical Republicans (white and black) by white Democrats, marking the end of the Reconstruction era in the South. In addition to its biblical allusions, the term also reflects the widely held belief among white southerners of a time that the Republican state regimes had been inefficient and corrupt. Also that the "Redeemers" who re-established white Democratic control of the state also restored effective and honest government.
