2. Dubrovnik or Ragusa is a coastal city located in the region of Dalmatia in modern Croatia. It has a population (2001) of 43,770 inhabitants. It is one of the most important resorts of the Adriatic Sea. It is known as the "Pearl of the Adriatic", "Slav Athens" since ancient inhabitants distinguished it as unique, in a region full of such barbarity, which proliferated great exponents of the humanity of the arts and sciences. The county town of Dubrovnik-Neretva. Dubrovnik is a city surrounded by walls and fortifications, at the foot of the mountain of St. Sergius, which falls steeply to the waters of the Mediterranean. In 1979, the old city of Dubrovnik (the walled enclosure) was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco; the declaration was extended in 1994.
