The brief items Office space at CERN Re-optimisation of 104 offices will happen soon Priority for people working on L1Calo operation in any group Operational tasks 2011 guesstimates recently updates More careful review at end of year Cost sharing Small, cheap new item to build, non-urgently Papers, conferences Thanks to Martin Wessels for a nice TIPP 2011 talk One poster accepted at TWEPP (Eduard Simioni, GOLD) Once again trying to re-invigorate publications Upgrade Amazingly brief for once Because we arranged to have another meeting in July 30/06/2011 L1Calo Summary, Technical Proposal et al

The longer items Management roles Report from Search Committee on Project Leadership Many thanks to members of SC: Chris, Hans-Christian, Jim, Pete Recommendations approved by Management Committee From October 1st, for two years: L1Calo Project Leader: Martin Wessels L1Calo Deputy Project Leader: Steve Hillier Martin will step down from his current Trigger Operation role in September Steve will have ‘special responsibility’ for L1Calo Upgrade Effort at CERN Bruce summarized needs for operational support at CERN Especially in view of experts deserting the ship Ideally would like more back-up for Bruce and Martin in 2012 Permanent, experienced LTAs would be nice, but difficult to obtain Need to transfer skills to available staff and students Better documentation and training required 30/06/2011 L1Calo Summary, Technical Proposal et al

Items for your diary Next L1Calo three-day meeting: CERN: 19th-21st October One week after next ATLAS week We do not plan to make block booking Reserve your hostel rooms now! Please do it during this talk You can always cancel later Subsequent meetings Early 2012, CERN, may try to repeat the Level-1 Upgrade meeting style of this week Early July 2012, possibly QMUL, to be confirmed 30/06/2011 L1Calo Summary, Technical Proposal et al

Operations session Please check the slides for details Main themes: Refining the EM/Tau thresholds in 2011 BCID and unexpected noise sources (MBTS) Calibration Monitoring Understanding pile-up Planning Quick summary: Lots of interesting work undertaken, many nice results Still lots more interesting work to do! 30/06/2011 L1Calo Summary, Technical Proposal et al

What we’ve learned this week We have some of the needed simulation results We should document conditions etc in COM note But we’re still missing quite a lot Samples for 5 x 1034 Suggestion of calorimeter-only production to help here Proof of principle for many algorithms We need to describe many more options in Phase-II 30/06/2011 L1Calo Summary, Technical Proposal et al

9 Consequences for Timescale
Hope to release Sections 1-3 in about one week Still requires a many blanks to be filled and general editorial work Opinion generally against something immediate, but it has to be very soon Anything done on one week is still likely to be light on supporting evidence Want to have this available to support LoI Phase-II section needs a lot more work I’m not convinced that’s just writing and simulation Probably requires some strategic thinking too 30/06/2011 L1Calo Summary, Technical Proposal et al

10 Returning to Questions from Monday…
Is it a Technical Proposal? Probably Yes Is it a few chapters of another document? Perhaps the LoI? No Who does it need to be approved by? TDAQ, Upgrade organisation? Both, in that order Will we still need a TDR? And when? For Phase-I I hope not For Phase-II Probably, but when? How does ATLAS agree on Phase-II architecture? Maybe we can make progress this week But this forum is not enough I’m no clearer 30/06/2011 L1Calo Summary, Technical Proposal et al
