3. Key Energy Indicators

3 1. Introduction Country in the horn of Africa
Total area million square km 100 million inhabitants Population growth rate – 2.3% per year Average annual GDP growth rate ~ 11 % Ethiopia

4 1. Introduction… Energy Resources Resource Unit Exploitable Reserve
Exploited Percent Hydropower MW 48,030 ~21% Solar/day kWh/m2 4 - 6 ~0% Wind speed m/s GW 7 at 50m 1,350 ~2.4% Geothermal 10,000 Wood Millions tons 1,120 50% Agricultural waste 15 – 20 30% Natural gas Billions m3 113 0% Coal 96.3 Oil Shale 253

5 1. Introduction… Electricity Institutional framework
Energy institutions affiliated to Ministry of Water, Irrigation and Electricity Ethiopian Energy Authority– regulatory body for electricity and energy efficiency Ethiopian Electric Power– generation, transmission, Ethiopian Electric Utility – distribution, sales and Regional energy bureaus

6 2. Key Policy and Regulatory Issues
Energy Policy Framework Give high priority to development of:- hydropower Wind, geothermal and solar Bio-fuels for transport and household use Exploration for hydrocarbon fuels Energy efficiency and conservation Environmental sustainability Capacity building

7 2. Key Policy and Regulatory Issues…
Recently issued / revised Legal frameworks based on the current national and regional development of energy regulations;- Energy Law Geothermal law PPP law is approved by Council of Ministers and forwarded to House of Parliament for final endorsement.
