LAKOTA VIDEO Watch the You Tube video on a Lakota festival ridge-pow-wow After watching the video, return to this presentation.

LAKOTA CULTURE AREA The Lakota lived in the Great Plains, with vast, flat grasslands. It could be dry at times, with warm summers and cold winters.

LAKOTA TRANSPORTATION
There were no horses in North America before the Europeans arrived, and the bison did not want to cooperate with Native Americans, so the Lakota used a sled called a travois that was pulled by dogs or people. On the flat plains, it worked. This helped with their nomadic lifestyle.

LAKOTA FOOD The Lakota relied on the bison (buffalo) for much of their needs. They also relied on deer, birds, and other small animals. Food was one of the things the Lakota could take from them. The Lakota would also harvest corn and other plants if given the chance to.

LAKOTA CLOTHING Animal hides and skins were the primary clothing of the plains, and they could ad furs as the weather got colder. Beads and other items that were traded for could be added fro decoration.

LAKOTA CLOTHING Bright colors like blues, greens, and reds were often featured in Lakota clothing and art.

LAKOTA SHELTER The Lakota needed to follow their food as it migrated across the plains, so their shelter needed to move with them. Teepees made of skins and branches could be set up and taken down quickly.

LAKOTA TODAY The Oglala Sioux Tribe is one of many plains nations that still reside in their traditional lands in the United States.
