1 We will plot ordered pairs.
Learning Objective We will plot ordered pairs. What are we going to do? CFU Activate Prior Knowledge Plot the points onto the number line below. A. 7 Students, you already know how to identify positive and negative numbers on a number line. Now, we will use that skill to plot ordered pairs. Make Connection B. -7 B A 5 10 -5 -10

Concept Development Coordinate Plane x y Q1 (+,+) Q2 (–,+) Q4 (+, –) Q3 (–,–) The coordinate plane is a flat surface made by the intersection1 of two perpendicular2 number lines (axes). An ordered pair describes3 the location of a point on the coordinate plane using x- and y-coordinates. The x-coordinate is the position of the point along the x-axis. The y-coordinate is the position of the point along the y-axis. Points on the Coordinate Plane (4, 5) x y Identify the x-coordinate in the ordered pair below. Identify the y-coordinate in the ordered pair below. (6, -9) “The x-coordinate is ______________.” “The y-coordinate is ______________.” (6, 2) and (2, 6) do not describe the same point on the coordinate plane. Explain why not. 6 Relevance An ordered pair describes the location of a point on the coordinate plane using x- and y-coordinates. The x-coordinate is the position of the point along the x-axis. The y-coordinate is the position of the point along the y-axis. 1 Plotting ordered pairs will help you understand information in real life. Information in real life is often presented in graphs on a coordinate plane. 2 Plotting ordered pairs will help you tell where things are located. Most maps use a grid system that works like a coordinate plane. 3 Plotting ordered pairs will help you do well on tests. Sample Test Question: 20. Which of the following describes the point M on the graph? The point is at (6, -4). The distance of the point from the y-axis is 6. The point is at (-6, 4). The distance of the point along the y-axis is -6. Yes No M Does anyone else have another reason why it is relevant to plot ordered pairs? (Pair-Share) Why is it relevant to plot ordered pairs? You may give one of my reasons or one of your own. Which reason is more relevant to you? Why? CFU
