1 Vans, Trucks and Lorries – ‘Coming Soon’
Technology innovations that will change the way goods are transported Carl Christie Technical Specialist

2 Localised Urban Drivers
Climate Change UN Paris Agreement/2008 Climate Change Act IPCC report – Global Warming of 1.5°C Drivers of Change Air Quality Standards Regulations 2010 Clean Air Zones Average annual NO2 below 40µg/m3 Operational Safety Driver recruitment and wages Fuel costs Customer Expectations Same/next day delivery Scheduled pick up Traffic congestion and noise Localised Urban Drivers National Drivers

3 Trends in Goods Transportation
Natural Gas Hydrogen Battery Electric Range Extended Electric E-Cargo Bikes Urban Solutions Regional / Long Haul Solutions

4 Last Mile Deliveries DfT call for evidence ran from July – September 2018 Sept Government announced £2 million of funding to support uptake of e-cargo bikes E-Cargo Bike EcoHub and E-trailer <250W mid motor (replaces bottom bracket) Up to 500Wh Li-Ion battery (on seat tube) ~ kg payload Up to 50 mile range, replaceable battery Container acts as micro hub in city centre Deliveries by E-tricycle Electrically assisted payload boxes transferred to city centre then deliver by E-trailer bicycle Aim to understand the scale of the opportunity for e-cargo bikes, micro vehicles and e-vans to provide clean last mile delivery options. Sainsburys – 5 bikes operating from store, up to 100 online deliveries per day. ~97% of orders could be fulfilled in a single drop Trade off between capital and labour (training, insurance, handling)

5 Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV)
Small Vans ~4.1 million vans in the UK covering 51.7 billion miles each year (fastest growing traffic type over last 5 years): Target – 40% of new van sales to be ultra low emission by 2030 Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) M Nissan eNV200 Renault Kangoo Z.E. 33 B 30-40kWh battery capacity Official range of ~170 miles ‘Real-world’ range of ~120 miles Battery (39.4 million vehicles in total) DfT vehicle statistics Provisional road traffic estimates – June 2018 Motor/Generator

6 Large Vans M B Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) Now (OEM)
Coming Soon (OEM) M B Iveco Daily Electric Mercedes, Volkswagen, Renault Now (low volume/niche) Coming Soon (low volume/niche) Battery Motor/ Generator miles ~56kWh Arrival – 4.25t, £35k OEMs – 2019 onwards (eVito, Sprinter, Citan, eCrafter, Master) BD Auto e Ducato, LDV EV80 Arrival

7 Range Extended Electric Vehicles (REEV)
Large Vans Range Extended Electric Vehicles (REEV) M Motor/ Generator B Battery Ford Transit Custom LEVC Van G Generator 12-month trial of 20 vans in London 31 mile official electric only range 1.0 litre petrol engine Volume production = 2019 Trials with potential customers from public-sector fleets in second half of 2019 Taxi has official electric only range of 80 miles 1.5 litre petrol engine, 31kWh battery E Engine

8 Clean Van Commitment Commitment from 16 of the UK’s largest van fleets, containing 18,169 vans, to: Invest £40m in electric vans to 2020 (2,389 vehicles) Highlight UK market for electric vans All vans in cities to be switched to zero tailpipe emissions by 2028 Seek support in the following areas: Vehicle supply National charging infrastructure Permissions for depot infrastructure Power networks Renewable electricity

9 Commercial Vehicle Product Roadmap (APC)
Different solutions depending on duty – to meet emissions zones

10 Rigid Trucks and Tractor Units
~525,000 HGVs in the UK covering 17.2 billion miles each year: Target – Reduce HGV greenhouse gas emissions by 15% by 2025 (from 2015 levels) Low Emissions Freight and Logistics Trial (LEFT) £20m of grant funding from OLEV and Innovate UK to support industry-led trials of low and zero emission technologies for commercial fleets Electrification (Now) Electrification (Coming Soon) Tevva REEV Magtec/Paneltex Isuzu Volvo FL (& FE) – 16-27t Mercedes eActros – 18-25t Range extended electric or battery electric vehicles available (typically rigid trucks from t) Retrofit or repower Increasing OEM product available – Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, Volvo Series production 2020/21, Concepts for tractor units Target mile electric range

11 Rigid Trucks and Tractor Units
Natural Gas/Biomethane (CH4) Hydrogen? Stored on a vehicle as Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) in cylinders at >200bar or Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) at -162°C in low pressure insulated tanks. . Mature technology: 12-44t as rigid or tractor units from OEMs (Iveco, Mercedes, Scania and Volvo). Toyota (Fuel Cell) Hyundai (Fuel Cell) Volvo FM and FH ULEMCo (H2 Diesel Dual Fuel) Iveco Stralis NP 13l Compressions Ignition Engine (460hp) with SCR and DPF Substitution ratio of 90-95% Range of 1000km (~620miles) on LNG 9l Spark Ignition Engine (400hp) 3-way catalyst Range of 570km (~354miles) on CNG Natural gas is a fossil fuel primarily consisting of methane, commonly used for electricity generation and heating. Decomposition of wet organic waste in the absence of oxygen and subsequent upgrading of the product (biogas) produces renewable biomethane that can be used as a vehicle fuel or injected into the national gas grid (via ~3,900 miles of LTS pipeline). Volvo 205kg tank H2 transport – develop the UK vehicle market (HRS and vehicles) H2 supply - to accelerate development of low carbon bulk hydrogen supply solutions (closes Dec 2018) Hydrogen Transport Programme - £23 million Hydrogen Supply Competition - £20 million
