AIM: Today you will learn how temperature is measured and how to accurately read a thermometer
VOCABULARY Thermometer Celsius Fahrenheit Increment Eye level 11/18/2018
2
DEFINITION What is temperature ?
The average kinetic energy of a substance Kinetic energy = how fast the molecules are moving 11/18/2018
3
Why is one thing warmer than another?
QUESTION Why is one thing warmer than another? BECAUSE its average kinetic energy is greater – the molecules are moving faster 11/18/2018
4
Why is one thing cooler than another?
QUESTION Why is one thing cooler than another? BECAUSE its average kinetic energy is less – the molecules are moving slower 11/18/2018
5
In the United States… How is temperature measured ?
Fahrenheit scale (F) What is the freezing point of water? 32º F What is the boiling point of water? 212º F 11/18/2018
6
In the Metric System which is what we use in SCIENCE
How is temperature measured ? Celsius Scale (C) What is the freezing point of water? 0º C What is the boiling point of water? 100º C 11/18/2018
7
Which system do you think is easier?
Memorizing 32 and 212 degrees Or Simply knowing 0° is freezing and 100° is boiling ???? 11/18/2018
8
How do we correctly read a thermometer?
Always read a thermometer at eye level, never at an angle. Determine the scale BEFORE reading the temperature! Record the temperature to the most accurate value measured by the thermometer (ones or tenths) Record the temperature with the ° symbol and the unit (C, F or K) 11/18/2018
9
Lets Practice reading a thermometer
The thermometer is marked off in equal units – I call them “tick marks” These units are called increments 11/18/2018
10
Lets Practice reading a thermometer:
You have to be careful to determine how many degrees the increments actually represent 11/18/2018
11
Lets Practice reading a thermometer:
What do I mean by the term: “increments” Different thermometers have different increment scales, depending on how they are calibrated and printed… You have to check each thermometer before you read it! 11/18/2018
12
Lets Practice reading a thermometer:
What is the increment of each tick mark on this thermometer? You have to check before you read it! 11/18/2018
13
Lets Practice reading a thermometer:
50 30 What is the increment on this thermometer? You have to check before you read it! 11/18/2018
14
Lets Practice reading a thermometer:
What is the increment on this thermometer? 35 30 You have to check before you read it! 11/18/2018
15
Lets Practice reading a thermometer…
Is this correct? 11/18/2018
