1 Tools for making goals a reality
S.M.A.R.T. Goals Tools for making goals a reality

2 The difference between a dream and a goal is ACTION.
Dreams vs. Goals Goal Setting is like shooting an arrow. You may want to hit the target, but if you don’t take action – shooting the arrow – you only have a dream. The difference between a dream and a goal is ACTION.

3 Why Goals are Important?
Dream + Action Steps + Target Date = Goal Goals provide direction, a sense of accomplishment and they define your growth and development. Roadmaps - You would drive to Los Angeles without one? Recipes – Would you make the Thanksgiving dinner without them? Why go through life without goals? Goals are your roadmap for a successful education and life.

4 Goal Setting 101 Examples of misguided challenge definitions:
Clearly define the challenge facing you. What issue, problem or desire are you trying to change or achieve? Examples of misguided challenge definitions: Low grade in class – Teachers fault vs. lack of effort on your part? “I’m Bored!” – Too much TV time vs. joining a club or organization.

5 Goal Setting 101 It is very important to write down your Goal, Action Steps and Target Date Use the positive, action-oriented words – I can and I will in your goal statement and with your action steps Read your goal every day Stretch your abilities

6 S.M.A.R.T. Goals are… Specific Measurable Attainable Realistic Timely

7 Specific Specific goals answer the following questions:
Who:       Who is involved? What:      What do I want to accomplish? Where:    Identify a location. When:     Establish a time frame. Which:    Identify requirements/constraints. Why:       Specific reasons, purpose or benefits of accomplishing the goal.

8 Measurable To determine if your goal is measurable, ask questions such as How much? How many? How will I know when it is accomplished?

9 Attainable The goal is “do-able” It is action-oriented It is “within reach” of mortals! A may also stand for Action-oriented and that requires action verbs in the goal!

10 Realistic The goal must be an objective toward which you are both willing and able to work. Again, it must be “do-able” People must believe it can be accomplished

11 Timely You should establish a timeframe
The timeframe must be realistic Everyone needs to know the timeframe…make it public **T may also represent Tangible in that you can experience it with one of your senses!

12 Time to think…and write
Craft a personal goal Craft a goal for the school year
