The Most Beautiful Roof in the World Alejandro’s Gift A Natural Force Saving the Peregrine Falcon The Day They Parachuted Cats on Borneo Protecting Wildlife(Page 472M) Activate prior knowledge about endangered species and habitats with library resources. Discuss environmental issues and ask students to start thinking about a problem they would like to research.Letter to the editor(Page 487F) Guide students in a discussion about sources they can use to learn about natural disasters and the effect on human and wildlife habitat.(Page 489A) Students will research an aspect of the unit theme. Each student will be responsible for a written investigation and an oral presentation.(Page 489C) As students begin to define their research problem, a wide variety of library resources, both print and non print, will provide support and information. The Most Beautiful Roof in the World(Page 492M) Library materials provide background knowledge about rain forests and the work of rain forest scientists in South and Central America, Africa, and Southeast Asia.Editorial(Page 507C) Students form research groups and begin to pose conjectures. The library can provide multiple sources for students to access as they explore their research problems. 3. Alejandro’s Gift(Page 510M) Provide books about the Southwest desert habitat to build background knowledge about the adaptations of plants and animals in this habitat. Include Reading Rainbow’s Alejandro’s Gift. The film explores how important water is for all living things. Public service ad(Page 519F) Using Resources on Ecosystems. Students investigate the organisms that live in the desert and the resources that support the organisms. Students design a poster to illustrate their findings.(Page 521A) Have students use a variety of resources to find out the characteristics of deserts in preparation for construction of a model of a desert environment. ****Water/California Aquaduct video 4. A Natural Force(Page 531F) Students work in small groups using a variety of library materials to find out how forest fires help renew forests. Editorial cartoon(Page 533A) Students read about specific varieties of trees and plants, such as the lodgepole pine tree and the Ceanothus shrub. Working in small groups, they choose a specific variety of tree, shrub, or flower that grows in a forest. Then they investigate the plant’s characteristics. 5. Saving the Peregrine Falcon(Page 549F) Students work in small groups to choose a topic to investigate about biodiversity. Persuasive report(Page 551D) While working on the research problems, provide some instruction on note taking and ways to incorporate the notes into an outline. Use library resources and online sites to practice. 6.The Day They Parachuted Cats on Borneo(Page 565F) Students conduct research using various resources such as non fiction books, field guides, encyclopedias, and the Internet to confirm or correct their research about biodiversity. Persuasive report(Page 567D) Use atlases and maps in the library to answer research questions.
