The current youth lacrosse development model rushes to identify the best players at early ages, and leaves potential players behind with limited opportunity to play. The LADM aim is to keep more players engaged with the sport longer, allowing the best players to emerge as they reach physical maturity.

Fun and Kid-Centered Fun is the #1 reason kids play sports. Who do we serve? The kids. 9 out of 10 kids say that fun in the main reason they participate in sports. Winning was 48th on a list of reasons kids play according to a recent study. 70% of kids are dropping out of youth sports by age 13, and the top reason is--you guessed it-- that it wasn’t fun anymore. if lacrosse not fun, kids will find other ways to fill their recreational time.

Fundamentals (6 to 9 years old): Allows children to develop their movement ABCs-agility, balance, coordination and speed—and learn the basics of the game while emphasizing fun, cooperation, and maximum touches with the ball. Kids sample lots of physical activities and sports. Technical (Skills) Development Proficient at stick grip and scooping, Exploring and developing other fundamental lacrosse skills--catching, passing, shooting, cradling, dodging.

Foundations (8 to 12 years old): This is the “golden age” of learning and sport skill development. Children become less self-centered and are able reflect on their actions and learn from their mistakes. This is the optimal time to learn and build a large repertoire of lacrosse-specific skills and learn the basic principles of play in a fun, challenging environment. Players sample many physical activities and sports in addition to lacrosse. Player-centered environment - what it should look like Fun, inclusive engaging, and positive; appeals to this age-group’s desire for fun, improvement and teamwork through the progressive development of existing and new skill base. Focus on trying your best. Growth mindset. Cognitive Development By age 9 or 10 developing the ability to think in advance of ball (anticipation); recall memory significantly improves; can follow more complex instructions; stay on task and focus longer; can understand where to move with and without the ball; can think in sequential thought and actions.

Foundations (8 to 12 years old): This is the “golden age” of learning and sport skill development. Children become less self-centered and are able reflect on their actions and learn from their mistakes. This is the optimal time to learn and build a large repertoire of lacrosse-specific skills and learn the basic principles of play in a fun, challenging environment. Players sample many physical activities and sports in addition to lacrosse. Emerging Competition (11 to 14 years old): This is the stage in which we make or break the athlete; when children choose to continue participation in the sport. This is the time for developing strong technical skills and is the dawning of tactical awareness. Players are also introduced to concepts like mental preparation, goal setting, and coping with winning and losing. Players learn advanced technical skills and position-specific techniques. The major focus is on applying skills, strategies and tactics from practice to competitive situations. Athletes participate in several sports throughout the year or a variety of physical activities.

Social-Behavioral Development - we know that at this age athletes are… More independent, able to share, improved decision making ability. Desire independence and are building confidence. Peer group acceptance becomes important and physical competency plays a role in how one is perceived. Girls tend to form “cliques,” boys have more broad team relationships.

Emerging Competition (11 to 14 years old): This is the stage in which we make or break the athlete; when children choose to continue participation in the sport. This is the time for developing strong technical skills and is the dawning of tactical awareness. Players are also introduced to concepts like mental preparation, goal setting, and coping with winning and losing. Players learn advanced technical skills and position-specific techniques. The major focus is on applying skills, strategies and tactics from practice to competitive situations. Multi-Sport Participation/Sport and physical activity diversification/Other sports and activities Athlete may decide to start focusing more on 1-2 key sports. If lacrosse rises to the top in motivation and desire, suggest picking another sport that is complimentary during another season. Such as field hockey, soccer, ice hockey, football, basketball etc. Technical (Skills) Development Consistently demonstrates and can execute fundamental skills under pressure.
