Instrument Families Before we do our listening, let’s review some BrainPop pages on instrument families: The Brass Family What instruments are in this family? Can there be other kinds of percussion instruments?

Promenade This is a movement, one of several that make up the work Pictures at an Exhibition, by Mussorgsky. What does the word promenade mean? Do you remember what timbre means? Example: the clarinet has a distinct sound. Each instrument family sounds a certain way. Solos (one) sound different than tutti (all).

Listen for: Solos Instrument families Tap each footprint as you “promenade” along with the beat of the music.

What did you hear? What solo instruments did you hear?
Remember, solo means that the instrument is played by itself, or with the rest of the orchestra playing softly. What groups of instruments did you hear? Remember the instrument families, woodwind, brass, strings, and percussion. What instrument family didn’t you hear? Were there any singers?
