Romanticism Cultural movement from 1750-1850
Shaped Western literature and arts DOES NOT refer to romance in the sense of an affectionate relationship Refer to the artistic style emphasizing: imagination, freedom, and emotion

Romanticism Was a reaction to the Enlightenment
Enlightenment focus on: classical Greek & Roman lit stress: order, harmony, reason, & emotional restraint Romanticism focus on: simple, direct language, intense feelings, & glorification of nature

Nature was powerful & constantly changing Nature was a force that would/could never be fully understood Enlightenment thinkers thought that nature could be rationalized & completely understood

1880s, many writers/artist turned away from the harsh realities of industrial life to celebrate nature.
