Prejudice and Discrimination
Prejudice- refers to attitudes (Fear, anger, hatred, other negative emotions) Discrimination – refers to actions (Unequal treatment based) Racism –beliefs or actions based on race

Modern Racism A subtle form of racism
belief that serious discrimination in America no longer exists belief that racial inequality is the fault of minority group Most who fit this description do not consider themselves racist

Types of Discrimination: Individual
behavior by an individual that leads to unequal treatment based on race or other factors Taxi-driver refusing to pick up someone

Types of Discrimination: Institutional
arrangements, practices that tend to favor one group procedures that result in unequal treatment or opportunities Deliberate, subtle, or unintended Example: Taxi company instructing drivers not to pick up certain groups

Causes of prejudice and discrimination
Cultural Transmission: prejudice is transmitted from generation to generation through family/media Group Identification Theory: prejudices start when pride in your own group goes too far Frustration-aggression hypothesis: prejudices develop in response to people’s need to cope with the frustration in their lives.

Solutions THINK CRITICALLY (work in groups of 4-5)
Create a solution for prejudice/discrimination based on one of the theories Can be a policy for employers, law for a state, requirement for families, requirement for the media , curriculum standard for teachers, etc. Cultural Transmission: prejudice is transmitted from generation to generation through family/media Group Identification Theory: prejudices start when pride in your own group goes too far Frustration-aggression hypothesis: prejudices develop in response to people’s need to cope with the frustration in their lives. Respect. Respect each other’s viewpoints. Allow everyone to complete their statements before responding. Remember not to make generalizations or stereotypical comments about groups (racial, ethnic, religious, or other)
