Definition: seizure of a country or territory by a stronger country – one country seeks to extend its authority by conquering other countries or by establishing economic and political dominance over other countries
Stronger country would dominate the political, economic, and social life of the weaker country

5. Types of imperialism Colony: governed internally by a foreign power
Protectorate: its own internal government, but under control of an outside power
Sphere of Influence: outside power claims exclusive investment or trading privileges
Economic Imperialism: independent, but less-developed country controlled by private business interests rather than other governments (Dole Fruit Company – Hawaii)

Europeans control trade in the colonies and set up dependent cash-crop economics

Christianity spreads to Africa, India, and Asia
