Industrialization spreads to the United States & Germany Countries began competing for colonies around the world for raw materials and markets

4 Imperialism Definition: seizure of a country or territory by a stronger country – one country seeks to extend its authority by conquering other countries or by establishing economic and political dominance over other countries Stronger country would dominate the political, economic, and social life of the weaker country

5 Types of imperialism Colony: governed internally by a foreign power
Protectorate: its own internal government, but under control of an outside power Sphere of Influence: outside power claims exclusive investment or trading privileges Economic Imperialism: independent, but less-developed country controlled by private business interests rather than other governments (Dole Fruit Company – Hawaii)

6 Indirect Control Direct Control Local government officials used Limited self-rule Goal: develop future leaders Gov’t institutions based on European styles, but may have local rules Ex: British – Nigeria, India, Burma U.S. – Pacific Islands Foreign officials brought in to rule No self-rule Goal: assimilation Gov’t institutions based only on European styles Ex: French – Somaliland, Vietnam German – German East Africa

Colonization Europeans control land and people in areas of Africa, Asia, and Latin America Colonial Economics Europeans control trade in the colonies and set up dependent cash-crop economics Christianization Christianity spreads to Africa, India, and Asia
