1 Do Now Name 3 things that come to your mind when you think of acids and bases. Name any acids or bases that you know of.

2 Acids and Bases

3 Objectives SWBAT distinguish between an Acid and a Base
SWBAT describe the relationship between pH & the strength of an acid

4 Acids sour taste High concentration of H+ ions conduct electricity
(good conductor  strong acid, weak conductor  weak acid) react with bases to form water and a salt pH of 1-6, the lower the pH the stronger the acid Example  lemon juice

5 Bases Also called “alkaline” bitter taste, soapy feel
High concentration of OH- ions conduct electricity (good conductor  strong base, weak conductor  weak base) react with acids to form water and a salt pH of 8-14, the higher the pH the stronger the base Example  baking soda

6 What are some tests you could do to figure out whether a compound is an acid, abase, or neither?

7 Acid/Base Tests Touch / Taste
Conductivity test (to see if it is weak or strong) pH paper or pH probe

8 Everything in the world has a pH – either it is acidic, basic, or neutral
#8.1 Aim: What are acids and bases? Agenda QOD (5) Lesson: acid and bases (15) Activity: Acid or base? (15) Summary (5) No HW

9 pH Scale Ranges from 1-14 pH 7 is neutral
pH below 7 is acidic. The closer to 1, the more acidic. pH above 7 is basic. The close you get to 14, the more basic.

10 pH = - log [H+] pH Scale [H+] = concentration of hydrogen ions.
[H+] = 10-9 would give pH 9 (base). [H+] = 10-3 would give pH 3

11 Checks for Understanding
What is the hydrogen ion concentration in a solution with a pH of 8.0? 8 x 10-1M H+ 1 x 10-6M H+ 1 x 10-7M H+ 1 x 10-8M H+

12 Checks for Understanding
Which pH indicates a solution that has the highest concentration of OH- ions? 2 4 8 6

13 Checks for Understanding
Which represents the most acidic substance? Apple Juice (pH = 3.0) Black Coffee (pH = 5.0) Hand Soap (pH = 10.0) Household Ammonia (pH = 12.0)

14 Checks for Understanding
Which is not a property of an acid? conducts electricity reacts with metals corrosive taste bitter

15 Independent Practice

16 Exit Slip: Acids and Bases
Is citrus usually acidic or basic? Are household cleaners usually acidic or basic? Is NaOH going to be an acid or a base? A substance has a pH of 9. Is this substance an acid or base? Water is considered neutral. What pH is neutral?

17 Exit Ticket Answers Acidic Basic Base 7
Is citrus usually acidic or basic? Are household cleaners usually acidic or basic? Is NaOH going to be an acid or a base? A substance has a pH of 9. Is this substance an acid or base? Water is considered neutral. What pH is neutral? Acidic Basic Base 7
