Fighting for the Third World
Post WWII: World’s nations were grouped politically into the three worlds 1) Industrialized Capitalist Nations (US) 2) Communist Nations (SU) 3) Third World (Developing Nations not aligned with either nation) Third World nations were located in Latin America, Asia, & Africa Were economically poor & politically unstable Due to along history of colonialism Suffered ethnic conflicts & lack of technology & education 2

Cold War Strategies US, Soviet Union, & China used techniques to gain influence in the Third World Backed wars of revolution, liberation, or counterrevolution CIA & KGB (Intelligence Agencies) engaged in covert, secret activities US gave military aid, built schools, set up programs to combat poverty Soviets offered military & technical assistance 3

Association of Nonaligned Nations
Developing nations needed assistance Became important players in Cold War Not all Third World countries wished to play a role in Cold War India vowed to remain neutral Indonesia also struggled to stay uninvolved 1955: Indonesia hosted many leaders at the Bandung Conference Met to form “Third Force” or independent countries or Nonaligned Nations India & Indonesia were able to maintain their neutrality 4
