1 The Gottesman Hall of Planet Earth

2 Introduction

3 Organization of the Hall
As you enter the Hall, you will see the Dynamic Earth Globe suspended from the ceiling. Be sure to observe the various surfaces of our planet, as the layers of clouds, life, ice, and oceans are successively “peeled” away, revealing the underlying rocky surface. The Hall is organized into sections revolving around FIVE questions. The questions and a map of the hall are shown below: Section 1: How has the Earth evolved? Section 2: How do we read the rocks? Section 3: Why are there ocean basins, mountains, and continents? Section 4: Why is the earth habitable? Section 5: What causes climate and climate change? DYNAMIC EARTH GLOBE DYNAMIC EARTH GLOBE

4 Section 1: How has the Earth evolved?
Some of the Exhibits in this section include: Events leading to the formation of the early Earth Layers of the Earth Oceanic & Continental Crust Samples Earth’s Oldest Rock Ontario banded iron formation (changing atmosphere) Stromatolite from Mauritania (changing atmosphere) DYNAMIC EARTH GLOBE DYNAMIC EARTH GLOBE

5 Section 2: How do we read the rocks?
Some of the Exhibits in this section include: James Hutton “father of geology” Samples of the 3 types of rocks Radiometric dating The Grand Canyon Geologic unconformity

6 Section 3: Why are there ocean basins, mountains, and continents?
Some of the Exhibits in this section include:

7 Section 4: Why is the Earth Habitable?
Some of the Exhibits in this section include: Sulfide chimneys Biogeochemical cycles( the rock cycle, carbon cycle & water cycles Formation of mineral ores
