Read the paragraph below and find examples of metaphor, simile, onomatopoeia, personification, oxymoron and/or alliteration.
The annual community picnic was an event not to be missed. This year, the sun stretched its shining arms around the park, and the sunflowers danced from side to side. The picnic table was packed with palatable snacks and delicious pop in plastic glasses. Frisbees made a whizzing sound as they flew from person to person, and loud splashes came from the kiddie pool. The relay race was taken very seriously. Some thought it was as competitive as the Olympic games. The only difference was that none of the competitors were very good, so they had even odds of winning. All in all,
it was a great event this year.

3. “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allan Poe
Today, we’re going to read our third short story of the unit. It’s called “The Cask of Amontillado”, and it was written by Edgar Allan Poe, one of the most famous horror authors of all time.
To get a better sense of who Poe was, we’re going to watch a quick 3 minute video bio about his life. As we watch, write down five things you learn about him on your paper.

“The Cask of Amontillado” is a story of revenge and murder… But before we get into it, there are a few things you should know:
Cask: a wine barrel
Amontillado: fancy Spanish wine

Afterwards, we’re going to do a creative project in response to the story, so make sure you pay attention 

6. “The Cask of Amontillado” Activities
For today, you have two jobs:
1. Complete the “Cask of Amontillado” storytelling arc activity. For each number of the storytelling arc, you should summarize the plot point and give on line of text from that part of the story. If you don’t have enough room, you can number your answers and write on the back. If you would like to work with a partner, you may!
2. Complete the “Cask of Amontillado” movie poster project. For this assignment, you will create a movie poster for Poe’s story. See assignment sheet for details!
